Fraction Fun!

Sunday 31st January 2016

Sunday is a working day in Dubai and I have just returned from another busy day in school. It was a wonderful day and the children really enjoyed learning about fractions. To get the children excited I decided to use Skittles to teach them about fractions, estimating and probability.

The lesson was very exciting and the children enjoyed the challenge of estimating what fraction of each colour was in each bag. The higher ability children also calculated the equivalent fractions.

We will continue learning about fractions tomorrow with another hands on activity. A huge number line labeled 0-1 will be drawn on the playground. Each child (differentiated to ability) will have an A4 piece of paper with a fraction written in the middle The children will have to place the fraction on the number line. It will be a fun, hands on activity that will be a great way to get the children seeing fractions in a different way. We can repeat the activity using decimal points for the higher ability children.

Day 2 and ready to share!!!

Saturday 30th January 2016

It is Saturday afternoon and I am sat completing my planning for the week ahead. Working in the Middle East means that we work a Sunday-Thursday week, so today is effectively a Sunday in the UK. I have already been out to an indoor play centre with my 2 year old son, so it is now time to plan for the week. Over the next few months I will share resources that I use, as well as sharing some tips/advice on teaching in the Primary Classroom. I will also share some of the funny moments throughout the week.

All the resources that I share you can find on:

https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/boltoncharlie

Some of these will be resources that I am happy to share for 'Free' and some will be charged at a small fee. Hours and hours have gone into some of these resources, so you definitely get value for money.

We are currently learning about Mountains and Volcanoes and next week the children will be interviewing 'Alan Arnette', who has climbed Everest three times!
*** For children to understand how the air is different at altitude, I am going to get them to breathe through a straw for a whole minute. This gives a similar feeling to being at Everest base camp. I will also get the children to carry a heavy bag and breathe through the straw. This will bring the learning to life for the children...

Where to begin...?

Friday 29th January 2016

As I sit here writing my first post, I am going round in circles thinking about how I want my blog to read, what I want to achieve out of it and what people will want to know. I have been teaching ten years and have taught in four different countries, which have included England, Vietnam, Russia and the UAE. There is so much that I want to share and so many funny moments that have taken place in the classroom. My teaching is all about active participation, fun and ensuring all children leave each day knowing something they didn't know at the start.
So I guess there I have it... my blog will be about the day to day teaching and all those moments that make it the best job in the world. I will also share my teaching ideas, strategies and you will hopefully learn something along the way.
It is Friday night here in Dubai and I think it is time to watch another episode of Homeland. 'Just one more episode' is a regular saying in my house. I will update this blog on a regular basis.
Enjoy the weekend!
